The story of the Free Reed label......The British folk music and concertina revival of the last 25 years or so owes a great deal to a little duplicated (roneoíd) newsletter, which became a solid little jourmal called ëFree Reed Magazineí. The back issues of this charming magazine (still available) now give todayís enthusiasts a great flavour of the keenness and enthusiasm that marked the early days of the concertina and folk-music revival in England. All 24 issues were edited, typed, pasted, collated. stuffed and mailed by Neil Wayne, and the magazine soon began to supply to its readers a selection of the limited range of folk records featuring the concertina. Out of this 'readers only' Mail Order Records service sprang the 'Free Reed' record label, launched in early 1976: The label, initially marketed only through the readership of Free Reed magazine, soon became a major British folk music record label, with a catalogue of over 30 releases by 1981. |
