http://www.freedmus.demon.co.uk/conccd.htm Original back issues of 'Free Reed magazine' and 'Concertina Newsletter' - see below, and for - Rare surviving stocks of Free Reed label vinyl LPs click here The concertina revival of the last 25 years or so owes a great deal to a little duplicated (roneo'd) newsletter, originally called 'The Concertina Newsletter' during 1969/70, which became, as its readership grew to well over 2000, a solid little magazine, henceforth called 'Free Reed Magazine'. It ran to 24 well-filled issues, each one full of articles, photographs & stories about the history and development of the concertina family of instruments, with articles on related free reeded instruments like melodeons, mouth organs and accordions, and a great deal of the history of the instrument, repair advice, and collecting hints on the concertina. These charming magazines now give today's enthusiasts a great flavour of the keenness and enthusiasm that marked the early days of the concertina revival. All 24 issues were edited, typed, pasted, collated. stuffed and mailed by Neil Wayne, and as its popularity and readership spread around the world, the magazine soon began to supply to its readers a selection of the limited range of concertina records then available. Out of this 'readers only' Mail Order Records service sprang the large and comprehensive 'Free Reed Mail Order Records' Folkmusic and folk instrument supply service. Neil's fanatical collecting and research activities on the history of the concertina had enabled him to meet, interview and to record the music and reminiscences of many older players and makers of the concertina, and many of these historic and unique recordings began to be released on the new Free Reed record label from early 1976, and the label, initially marketed only through the readership of Free Reed magazine, soon became a major British folk music record label, with a catalogue of over 30 releases by 1981. Neil Wayne has now hunted out the very last surviving issues of the both 'Concertina Newsletter' and 'Free Reed Magazine' - which are now very much collectors' items, and whose source information has been much borrowed, lent, pirated and has now been 'recycled' to form the basis for the many new 'Squeezebox' magazines now available around the world. (See Website about current Squeezebox Magazines). We currently have about 200 to 300 of each of the following surviving issues, so if you need to replace your old worn copies, fill out your set, or add this definitive selection of the seminal concertina magazine to YOUR concertina archives, send us an order!!
